We have recieved the following information. As soon as we hear any additional information we will let all know.......
Good afternoon,
I'm forwarding (below) for your awareness a summary of a message Chief Michael Thurz (Glastonbury FD & President of the CT Fire Chiefs Asso.) received from Bob McGarry from the CT DMV regarding the registration of FD vehicles. Bob will be speaking at the January meeting of the CT Fire Chiefs Association.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There has been a change in DMV Policy based on a new interpretation of the law. Here's a high level view.
For years DMV policy has been:
1. Fire trucks don’t have to be registered, and
2. If registered, they can’t have Municipal plates.
Recently a Wethersfield truck was ticketed for being unregistered. That prompted a review of our policy. That review, resulted in changing our policy to:
1. Fire trucks have to be registered, and
2. They can have Municipal plates.
I want to let the chiefs know this and also the difference between registering with Municipal plates and Fire Apparatus plates.
2/18/2016....UPDATE...................
A short time ago, an email was sent in regards to DMV requirements to register all apparatus either with municipal plates or Fire Apparatus plates. This was eventually to tie into the logging of required NFPA testing tracking to assure it was being done by all departments (SB103).
I have attached a information sheet showing the difference between the 2 types of registration, as well as the annual requirements of each. There was some discussion of Fire Districts which are not part of the municipality being eligible for municipal plates. They can get them.
