CITY OF FOLSOM SENIOR EQUIPMENT MECHANIC DEFINITION Under direction, perform repair, maintenance, and modification of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment. Incumbents may oversee, monitor, and/or direct the work of lower level personnel. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The Senior Equipment Mechanic is the lead or specialist level in the Equipment Mechanic series. Incumbents serving in a lead capacity provide direction to lower level staff including assigning, directing, and reviewing the work of staff and work on specialized projects or equipment containing a high number of complex and difficult tasks and assignments, and/or requiring specialized knowledge. Positions at this level are distinguished from those in the lower classification of Equipment Mechanic Specialist by the independence with which they perform their duties of handling the most difficult and complex work and performing leadwork. This class is distinguished from the class of Equipment Mechanic Supervisor in that the latter serves as the full supervisor of incumbents in the lower levels of the series. Fire Apparatus Mechanic Option: Senior Equipment Mechanic in the Fire Department performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of gasoline and diesel powered fire apparatus, vehicles, and equipment. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all the duties listed. •
Assign and review the work of Equipment Mechanics and related staff in the• equipment maintenance records, and driver complaints. Determine service and repair work to be done according to equipment condition,• equipment. Diagnose difficult problems regarding repair, maintenance, and servicing of• ancillary tools and equipment. Repair and maintain gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment, and• equipment; train employees in shop safety and safe use of equipment. Train employees in the repair, maintenance, and service of automobiles and• Coordinate pick up and delivery of equipment.• Perform smog and diesel smoke tests.• 2 Inventory and order parts, supplies, and tools.• Repair and fabricate equipment parts using acetylene and arc welding tools.• Maintain equipment maintenance and service records, inventories records• including testing of new and newly repaired apparatus and equipment. May perform or assist in the performance of annual apparatus and vehicle tests,• May perform periodic inspections of equipment• Maintain safety records.• Write reports.• Weld, fabricate, and paint repaired equipment.• May perform emergency road service on apparatus and equipment.• Oversee unit operations in the absence of the supervisor.• Perform related duties as assigned.EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Essential Duties” section of this specification. OR Four (4) years of full-time, increasingly responsible full-time experience in diagnosing, repairing, and adjusting gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment. Substitution: College or vocational education in automotive mechanics may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience on a year-for-year basis. License, Certification, Registration Requirements: The following are required within six (6) months of employment: • Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a disability will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
