FIRE APPARATUS MECHANIC
- 640DEFINITION OF WORK Under immediate supervision, performs responsible skilled work assisting in supervising the repair and maintenance of Pumper Fire Apparatus and Aerial Truck Apparatus and other equipment; does related work as required. EXAMPLES OF WORK Performs all phases of repair and maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment; manufactures repair parts for fire apparatus; overhauls gasoline and diesel engines; does body work, sheet metal work, welding and burning, brazing, lathe work and operates drill presses and electric and pneumatic shop tools; overhauls standard and automatic transmissions, hydraulic systems, fire pumps and plumbing, relief valves, governors, air, vacuum and hydraulic brakes; provides assistance to fire equipment operators during emergencies; performs field maintenance as required. Operates and runs the maintenance shop in the absence of the Fire Maintenance Supervisor. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma and experience in the repair of fire apparatus. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the practices, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of fire apparatus and of aerial truck apparatus and equipment; knowledge of engines and fire pumps and associated equipment; ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and determines appropriate repair of maintenance work; skill in the use of a wide variety of fire apparatus and equipment repair tools; ability to use machine tools for fabricating repair parts; ability to make major overhauls of fire apparatus and other fire apparatus equipment. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT Ability to obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina CDI Driver's License; air condition recovery system certificate; North Carolina Safety Inspection Certificate; and Emergency Vehicle Technical Certificate from the Emergency Vehicle Certification Commission, Inc. Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift 75 to 100 lbs. consistently and operate in tight places associated with maintenance of fire apparatus.
