CITY OF NEW BRITAIN CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION announces An Open Competitive Examination for ASSISTANT MASTER MECHANIC (AMM)……………….……$74,809 per year (3 Steps)

This position is represented by Local 992, IAFF, AFL-CIO.

NATURE OF WORK IN THIS CLASS:   Under the general supervision of the Master Mechanic, makes major and minor repairs and adjustments to all types of fire apparatus and equipment.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:  Assists the Master Mechanic in the overhaul, repair, and maintenance of all Fire Department apparatus including but not limited to cars, pumps, generators, and all other mechanical equipment assigned to the Fire Department.  Conducts testing and repairing of fire hose; assists the Master Mechanic in instructing department personnel in the use and operation of all Fire Department apparatus and equipment; and assists in the inspection of all department apparatus and equipment.  Performs related work as required.  Shall not have any duties, responsibilities or overtime in a firefighting capacity.  As this position does not require certification as a firefighter, the only advancement opportunity available with the department is the Master Mechanic positon.  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITIES:   Considerable mechanical skill and ability.  Skill in the use of materials, machines, and tools to close limits of tolerance.  Thorough knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of fire apparatus, automobile and truck motors, pumps, and other equipment assigned to the Fire Department.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:  Four (4) years of comprehensive professional experience in the repair of fire apparatus, trucks similar in size to fire trucks, diesel motors and auto equipment and possession of a valid Connecticut State Driver’s License with a CDL endorsement.  EVT II Certification preferred.  If the hired applicant does not have, he/she shall attain the following training and certification levels according to the NFPA 1071, Standard for Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Professional Qualifications. It is required that the AMM attain EVT I within one (1) year of hire and EVT II within two (2) years of hire. It shall be a mandatory condition of employment to attain and maintain EVT I and EVT II status within three (3) years of hire. It is also required that AMM attain the SCBA manufacturer Certified Air Mask Repair Education (C.A.R.E.) Program training and certification within 1 year of hire.  The City shall cover the costs associated with attaining and maintaining such training and certifications. All of these certifications shall be maintained for the duration of employment.  The hired applicant will also be required to obtain an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification within one year of hire and shall maintain for the duration of employment.

PASSING GRADE:  The minimum passing grade is 70%.  In the written examination phase only, the passing grade will be established utilizing the flexible passing point system.  In no event will this passing point be set less than 60% of raw score.

DURATION OF EMPLOYMENT LIST: A certified employment list shall be in effect for one year from the date of its establishment by the Civil Service Commission. The Civil Service Commission, may, upon the showing and finding of exigent or extenuating circumstances, extend the duration of the list when it is in the best interest of the City. However, in no case shall any certified employment list remain in force for more than two years.

RULE OF FIVE PLUS THREE:  When a vacancy exists for this position, the Appointing Authority is sent the first five names in rank on the certified employment list plus the next three highest City residents.  All may be considered equally for the one job vacancy.

PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONPrior to beginning work, the successful candidate must complete and qualify on a City medical examination, background check and drug screen.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:  The probationary period for this position shall be 12 months.

REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS:  All requests for reasonable accommodations in the testing process must be made in writing, no later than the closing date for applications. Documentation of the disability for which the accommodation is being requested must be received no later than two weeks after the closing deadline for applications. The candidate’s failure to provide documentation which satisfies the City’s requirements by the timetable above will result in an inability to provide an accommodation in the testing process. However, the candidate who meets the minimum qualifications for the position would still be eligible to complete with all other candidates in the standard testing process.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR CITY OF NEW BRITAIN RESIDENTS: Proof of domicile shall be filed at the time of filing the application. (Please see form attached). Failure to provide proof of domicile in accordance with this timetable may result in no residency consideration being granted for this examination.
